Tree service FAQ Long Island

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about tree service on Long Island. Answered by ISA-certified arborist Jim Caruso.

Tree Removal

How much does tree removal cost on Long Island?+

Tree removal cost depends on the tree's size, location relative to structures, and the difficulty of access. Small trees (under 20 feet) typically run less than larger ones, while 80-foot oaks near structures are more complex. We provide free on-site estimates with transparent, itemized pricing.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree on Long Island?+

It depends on your municipality. Some Nassau and Suffolk County towns require permits for trees above a certain diameter (typically 6 inches DBH) or in designated environmental areas. We're familiar with local requirements and can advise on permit needs during the estimate.

How long does tree removal take?+

Most residential tree removals take 2–6 hours for a full crew. Very large or complex removals may take a full day. We'll give you a realistic time estimate before the job starts.

What happens to the wood after removal?+

Branches are chipped on-site. You can keep the wood chips for mulch, or we haul them. Large logs can be left for firewood if you want them — otherwise they're removed. The yard is clean before we leave.

Tree Trimming & Pruning

When should I trim my trees?+

Late winter to early spring (February–April) is ideal for most species — the tree is dormant, wounds heal fast as growth resumes, and the structure is visible without leaves. Summer trimming is fine for dead or hazardous branches anytime.

How often do trees need to be trimmed?+

Mature shade trees typically need trimming every 3–5 years. Young trees may benefit from annual structural pruning. Utility line clearance may follow the utility company's schedule. We'll advise based on your specific trees.

What's the difference between trimming and pruning?+

Trimming is primarily about shaping and aesthetics. Pruning is targeted arborist work — removing specific branches to improve health, reduce hazard, or correct structure. Pruning requires knowledge of tree biology; trimming generally doesn't.

Why won't you top my tree?+

Topping — removing large portions of the main trunk and scaffold branches — is one of the most harmful things you can do to a tree. It creates weak, poorly attached regrowth, increases failure risk, and shortens the tree's life significantly. ISA certification specifically means knowing not to top trees.

Arborist Services

What is an ISA-certified arborist?+

The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certifies tree care professionals who pass a comprehensive examination on tree biology, diagnosis, pruning, and risk assessment. ISA certification (#NE-7234 for Jim Caruso) is the industry standard for qualified professional tree care.

Do I need an arborist or just a tree service?+

For health assessments, disease diagnosis, risk evaluations, or decisions about whether a tree can be saved, you need an ISA-certified arborist. For straightforward removal or trimming of a healthy tree with clear access, any competent licensed crew can handle it. We provide both.

Can you provide a written arborist report?+

Yes. Written arborist reports are available for property sales, insurance claims, permit applications, HOA disputes, or neighbor conflicts. Signed by Jim Caruso (ISA #NE-7234) and typically accepted by municipalities and insurers across Nassau and Suffolk County.

Emergency & Storm Service

Do you respond to emergencies 24/7?+

Yes. We have crews on call for emergency response nights, weekends, and holidays. For active hazards — tree on a structure, fallen tree blocking access, hanging limb over a walkway — call us directly. Response time depends on current demand.

Does homeowner's insurance cover tree removal?+

Often yes, when a tree damages a covered structure (your house, attached garage). Policies vary on whether they cover removal of the tree itself. We provide full documentation — photos, written assessment, itemized invoice — for insurance claims.

What should I do if a tree falls on my house?+

First, ensure everyone is safe and exit if the structure's integrity is uncertain. Don't go back in until it's inspected. Call us immediately — we can often respond same-day for structural hazards. Then call your insurance company to open a claim.

Pricing & Licensing

Are you licensed and insured in Nassau and Suffolk County?+

Yes. We carry Nassau County HIC License #H1892400 and Suffolk County HIC License #48221-H. We carry $2 million in general liability insurance and full workers' compensation coverage. We're happy to provide our certificate of insurance before any job.

How do I get a free estimate?+

Call us at (631) 625-8784, or fill out the form on our website. Jim or a crew lead will visit your property, assess the trees, and give you a clear written quote. No pressure, no obligation.

Do you offer any discounts for multiple trees?+

Yes. When we're mobilizing equipment to your property anyway, the cost per tree for additional work is lower. If you have multiple trees needing attention, doing them together is typically more economical than scheduling separate visits.
